Reader Progress › Reading Recap

You read tonight. Tomorrow morning, there's a podcast about it.

Not about the book in general. About the forty pages you just read. The scene you half noticed. The sentence that did more work than it looked like. The question you didn't think to ask.

Reading Recap makes an episode from exactly what you read, every time you put the book down. You tell the host what kind of show you want. It shows up in your podcast app.

Your host, your rules

The default host is a literature professor running a seminar for one student. Close reading, craft, two exercises to try tonight. That's one way to read.

You might want something else. Say so, in a sentence or two, and that's the show:

  • "Quiz me. Three questions about what I read, then the answers."
  • "Explain the history behind anything the book mentions."
  • "Talk to me in Spanish, slowly, about what happened."
  • "I'm a nurse reading this for book club. What would a good club notice?"
  • "Just help me remember the characters and where things stand."

One rule the host never breaks: it will not tell you what happens next. It only knows the pages you've reached.

How it works

  1. Read on your Kindle or phone as usual. KOReader, or Readest on iOS and Android, syncs your progress to Reader Progress like it does today.
  2. Close the book. A small plugin on your device looks at where you started and where you stopped, and sends just that passage.
  3. The episode gets made overnight. At three in the morning your time (or an hour you pick), everything you read that day becomes one episode per book. The host writes a script about those pages following your instructions, and a voice you picked reads it. Prefer one the moment you close the book? There's a setting for that.
  4. It lands in your podcast app. You get a private feed URL. Paste it into Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts, whatever you use. New episodes just appear.
Where your books are not

We never store your books. We don't want them and the law doesn't want us to have them.

The plugin runs on your device and sends only the passage you read in each session. On the default nightly schedule, the day's passages wait in a private, encrypted holding area until your episode is made, then they're deleted. Nothing ever serves them, and a two-day expiry is the backstop. If you'd rather nothing be held at all, choose "right away" and each passage is used once, in memory, and gone.

What we keep is the episode: the host's script, which quotes a line or two at most, and the audio. Both are yours, private to your feed, and you can delete any of them with one click. Nothing is sent unless you turn the feature on.

Questions

Does it spoil the book?
No. The host only ever sees the pages you've read, and it's told in no uncertain terms not to guess ahead.

What about PDFs?
Yes, page-based books work too. The plugin sends the text of the pages you turned.

Can I change the host mid-book?
Any time. The next episode uses whatever you saved last.

I read at midnight. When does the episode come?
Reading is grouped by your local day and the episode is made at the hour you pick, 3 am by default. Read at 11:55 pm and it's in that night's episode; read at 12:05 am and it's in the next one.

Can I use my own AI assistant with this?
Yes. Connect it and ask for your episodes, or tell it to change the host's instructions.

How do I cancel?
Manage billing, one click. Episodes you already have stay in your feed for four months.
